Black and White Eagle, performance, 2004

Materials: my painted body, snow, CD player, painting

Poland just joined European Union. I was concerned that our culture would now be subjected to dominating global trends and that we would not be able to preserve our heritage in the face of ever increasing Americanization of the Western world.

This concern was the inspiration for the performance.

The Polish national emblem is a white eagle on the red background. In the painting that I used in my performance, I transformed the national emblem by dividing the eagle and painting each half in black and white. As part of the performance, my body was painted in black and I lay on the white snow. By moving my naked, black-painted body, I imprinted a black eagle on the snow. All this was done to the tunes of the Polish national anthem played in the background.
